How to be a conscious consumer.
Over the past few years, our awareness of the impact that we, the human race, are having on the planet has hit the mainstream. We all know that there are changes that need to be made,by not only large corporations but us at home. And though your intentions may be good, it can often be difficult to know where to start!
As a sustainable swimwear brand, we have a good idea of the small changes that you can make to become a more conscious consumer. Though it can feel overwhelming, if you start small and make one change at a time, you’ll quickly realise that those changes can be extremely simple!
We all have to start somewhere and by just wanting to make a change to the way you shop, you’re already on your way to being a conscious consumer!
- Avoid fast fashion and buy quality when you can.
“Fast Fashion” has become a bit of a buzz word over the past few years - but what does it actually mean and how can you avoid it?
Fast Fashion is the term given to the manufacturing and marketing method which produces high-volumes of clothing at a fast pace. Ultimately, this process has a huge environmental footprint, which is what we’re trying to avoid!
You can do this by learning about the brands you love. Look into their manufacturing processes and the materials that they use. This way, you know the products you’re buying are of a high quality and are produced in a way that is sustainable.
Look for brands that prioritise sustainability in their about page, and support smaller businesses. Often, independent brands are more likely to work on a smaller scale, which undoubtedly will have a smaller impact on the environment.
- When you can’t buy quality, buy second hand.
We always recommend buying quality clothing that lasts, but we know that this often comes at a price! Why not try swapping your regular high street shops for your local charity shop. This way you’re reducing your footprint and giving unwanted clothing a second home, all without breaking the bank!
You can also look for upcycled products, for example, our swimwear is made with 100% regenerated nylon. From waste to wear, look for products that utilise existing materials and upcycle them into quality products that you love.
- Incorporate minimalism into your life wherever possible.
We’ve all been guilty of wanting the latest iphone or a new Summer wardrobe (every Summer) but when making changes to how we shop minimalism can be a really great thing to practice.
Ask yourself if you really need three new tops that look very similar to the tops you wore last Summer. Instead, why not treat yourself to one top you really love, one new swimming costume and a pair of shoes that you know will last!
You can also clear out your wardrobe and keep only clothes you love to wear, donating your unwanted clothing to charity.
- Make small steps in the right direction.
It’s really important not to be too hard on yourself, we are unlearning ingrained habits and it’s going to take time for us to change the way we shop.
Research is your greatest asset. There is so much information online about alternative materials, sustainability and consumer habits. Start by reading up on your favourite brands and make one change at a time.
By caring about how you shop, you’re already on the way to being a more conscious consumer!
