From Waste to Wear with Healthy Seas
Cleaning the Seas & Creating Something Incredible
Last month, we wrote a little bit about the Cosmokini partnership with ECONYL ® Brand – the company that creates our incredible sustainable regenerated Nylon.
Today, we’re talking about Healthy Seas, one of the amazing organisations to thank for cleaning the oceans and finding the polluting fishing nets and post-consumer waste that goes into creating this remarkable regenerated fabric.
Who Are Healthy Seas?
Healthy Seas was founded in 2013 with a mission to tackle the growing problem of marine animal deaths due to the loss and abandonment of fishing gear in the oceans.
With a huge team of 170 volunteer divers, ocean and sea clean-ups are organised to search for and salvage this fishing gear. Healthy Seas then partners with companies, such as ECONYL ® Brand, to ensure the waste materials are turned into a valuable and circular resource.
Why Do Healthy Seas Do What They Do?
Helping our seas to recover from human-caused pollution has never been more important. Take a look below at just some of the incredible and devastating facts from Healthy Seas about the oceans, the damage we’re doing and WHY they do what they do.
- From a recent report, by 2050 there will be more plastic in the seas and oceans than fish. Let that sink in.
- According to UNEP, around 640,000 tons of fishing gear are lost or abandoned in our oceans EACH YEAR.
- Every year, MILLIONS of animals, including whales, seals, turtles and birds, are injured and killed by ghost gear (this lost or abandoned gear).
- More than 500 species of marine and coastal animals are affected by the ingestion of, or entanglement in, marine debris including ghost nets.
The Benefits of Healthy Seas Work Are Wider Than You Think
The complex process behind every one of Healthy Seas missions serves a wealth of benefits for the planet long-term. Think about just these 3 points and you can begin to see the astonishing value of their work.
→ Marine Protection
The ocean clean-ups themselves are saving marine and coastal life every year. In fact, since the launch of Healthy Seas in 2013, the organisation has collected over 510,000 tons of nets and polluting debris from the seas and oceans around Europe. Plus, the public awareness these dives bring to the issues of sea pollution is invaluable.
→ ECONYL ® Regeneration
The collected ghost fishing gear is not just pulled from the ocean to save endangered wildlife. It’s then used to create a circular process of regeneration. This is where ECONYL ® Nylon comes in. You can read all about this process and how the nets and waste is used to create this regenerated Nylon, here.
→ Options for Brands
This entire process and the production of this recycled and recyclable regenerated Nylon gives new, circular options to brands all over the world who want a better solution. Brands from the textiles, apparel and interior industries now have a route to transform their business and build a more sustainable future for their brands.
The journey from waste to wear with Healthy Seas is certainly one worth paying attention to. An incredible organisation with a mission to clean and save our oceans and wildlife, we at Cosmokni are proud to be a small part of the community.
